Hola! Beinvenidos from Casa Amarilla – in the small coastal Mexican town of La Manzanilla. We arrived 6 days ago from Coldstream BC Canada and plan to be here for the winter months and make it our home.

One of the things we noticed right away about our space – is the incredible beauty in the yard – cultivated and maintained diligently by Vincente. The soft breeze makes the shadows shimmer – and caresses the skin like the warm breath of a summer lover.

The colours dance.

I can identify the regal coconut palms, the lush mango trees (which unfortunately produce before our arrival) multiple shades of bougainvillea, aloe vera, several varieties of hibiscus (our Love fern) and so many more that I do not know the names of yet.

Our home here is on the edge of the village. They say a 7 minute walk gets us into town or to the beach – We clock it at 12 – 15 minutes at “old – fart pace” aka a leisurely stroll.

Google map does not identify the street with a name – so a house number is out of the question! To coin phrase our grandson Brandon used to use – “We are right where we are.”

We have met our neighbour Manuel and look forward to getting to know him better – he wants to practice English and me Spanish – so good opportunity for both of us to achieve our goals.

Miguel the water guy says he delivers water 6 days a week – just leave the bottle out by the gate – it’s 16 pesos. We’ll pay him 20 and he carries it in and sets it up for us.

Antonio is by 3 days a week to tend to the pool – which we are loving in these 32 degree days. It is about 14 X 18 feet- long enough to swim about 10 strokes – all one depth – over my shoulders so about 4 1/2 feet deep – and a perfect temperature.

For the first time we have our own lime tree! I hear the blender call my name. More Later

¡Hola! Beinvenidos de Casa Amarilla – en la pequeña ciudad costera mexicana de La Manzanilla. Llegamos hace 6 días de Coldstream BC Canadá y tengo planes de estar aquí en los meses de invierno y hacer que nuestro hogar.

Una de las cosas que notamos de inmediato sobre nuestro espacio – es la belleza increíble en el patio – cultivado y mantenido con diligencia por Vincente. La suave brisa hace que el brillo sombras – y acaricia la piel como el cálido aliento de un amante de verano.

Los colores bailan.

Puedo identificar las palmas de coco regios, los árboles de mango exuberantes (que por desgracia producen antes de nuestra llegada) varios tonos de buganvillas, aloe vera, diversas variedades de hibisco (nuestra helecho Amor) y así muchos más que no sé los nombres de embargo .

Nuestra casa aquí está en el borde de la aldea. Dicen 7 minutos a pie nos lleva a la ciudad oa la playa – Tenemos un reloj que a los 12 – 15 minutos a la “vieja – ritmo pedo” también conocido como un paseo.

Google mapa no identifica a la calle con un nombre – por lo que un número de casa está fuera de la cuestión! Para acuñar una frase nuestro nieto Brandon utiliza para usar – “Estamos justo donde estamos.”

Hemos conocido a nuestro vecino Manuel y esperamos llegar a conocer lo mejor – que quiere practicar Inglés y me española – tan buena oportunidad para que los dos para lograr nuestros objetivos. Miguel dice que suministra agua 6 días a la semana – acaba de salir de la botella a cabo por la puerta – es 16 pesos. Lo vamos a pagar el 20 y lo lleva dentro y lo configura para nosotros.

Antonio es por 3 días a la semana para atender a la piscina – la que estamos amando en estos 32 días de grado. Se trata de 14 X 18 pies- tiempo suficiente para nadar unos 10 golpes – todo lo que uno de profundidad – más de mis hombros para cerca de 4 1/2 pies de profundidad – y una temperatura perfecta.

Celebrating The Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead is holiday celebrated in Mexico during the days of November 1 & 2. Even though this coincides with the Catholic holiday called All Soul’s & All Saint’s Day, the indigenous people have combined this with their own ancient beliefs of honouring their deceased loved ones.

It is believed that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31, and the spirits of all deceased children (angelitos) are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November 2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them.

In many villages, beautiful altars (ofrendas) are made in each home. They are decorated with candles, buckets of flowers (wild marigolds called cempasuchil & bright red cock’s combs) mounds of fruit, peanuts, plates of turkey mole, stacks of tortillas and big Day-of-the-Dead breads called pan demuerto. The altar needs to have lots of food, bottles of soda, hot cocoa and water for the weary spirits. Toys and candies are left for the angelitos, and on Nov. 2, cigarettes and shots of mezcal are offered to the adult spirits. Little folk art skeletons and sugar skulls, purchased at open-air markets, provide the final touches.

Day of the Dead is a very expensive holiday for the self-sufficient, rural based, indigenous families. Many spend over two month’s income to honor their dead relatives. They believe that happy spirits will provide protection, good luck and wisdom to their families. Ofrenda building keeps the family close.
On the afternoon of Nov. 2, the festivities are taken to the cemetery.

People clean tombs, play cards, listen to the village band and reminisce about their loved ones. Tradition keeps the village close.

Day of the Dead is becoming very popular across North America ~ perhaps because we don’t have a way to celebrate and honour our dead, or maybe it’s because of our fascination with it’s mysticism.
